Ioan Sbârciu - The Fold
Organizer: Art Centre Hugo Voeten, Herentals, Belgium
Location: City Business Centre
Program: 29.09.2017 – 5.11.2017
Revolving around the philosophical concept of the fold*, Ioan Sbarciu’s paintings describe the versatile dynamics of the artistic process and the challenge to constantly renegotiate the relation between color and expression.
Combining painting materials of different textures, the artist creates spatial assemblages that subvert the traditional notion of painting, and extend the potential of narrative form. Each element from this painting is contained and folded into the other, building up a structure, which in turn, enters into a dialogue with the specific place of display.
“The Fold” is the form of connection that follows the general principles of the Deleuzian theory about the infinite potential to differ as the original within the ongoing movement of the universe.
Ioan Sbarciu, (born in 1948, Feldru, Bistrita-Nasaud) lives and work in Cluj-Napoca. In 1973, he graduated the Ion Andreescu Art Institute, now the University of Art and Design, where, along the years, he served consequently as professor, head of the painting department, rector, and being currently chairman of the university’s senate.
“The Fold” includes two installations specially conceived for the exhibition at the City Business Centre Timisoara. The exhibition is a collateral event of Art Encounters Biennale of Contemporary Art, supported by Art Centre Hugo Voeten, MB Art Agency and Project Foundation Amsterdam.
