In The Autopsy of G. Asinius Pollio, envisioned as a direct eye-witness account, Călin Dan actually organizes the principles underlying the exhibition. There is a methodology for reading images, there is an extravagant Aby Warburg grid, there is more knowledge than object, there is an “afterlife” of antiquity. An imaginary quote by G.A. Pollio – “I was there, then” – becomes a non-commentary, and Călin Dan transforms it into a sophisticated validation device. Validation of risky historical structures, of political confusion, of urban identities which are scared of the dark and the cold. The image no longer awaits a solution, but has a stringent need for comfort.
